Major Compensation for Crushed Worker

A factory worker whose hand was crushed after being dragged into machinery has been awarded £300,000 in compensation.

Kendal paper manufacturer James Cropper Plc was forced to compensate employee Wayne Miller after the accident left Mr Miller permanently disabled.

He suffered serious crush and burn injuries to his left hand and forearm after attempting to fix a machine only for his sleeve to get caught in its workings. His hand and arm were dragged in and a skin graft from his hip was later needed to mask his extensive injuries.

Solicitors working on behalf of Mr Miller found that employees were given no written safe working practice for the given machinery, despite other tasks relating to the machine having health and safety practices logged.

Prior to Mr Miller's accident, there had also been two further incidents involving a similar machine on the factory floor, yet no emergency stop buttons had been installed. As a result, Mr Miller had to wait and writhe in pain until a colleague ran downstairs to switch the machine off.

James Cropper Plc admitted liability and the case was settled out of court and more emergency stop buttons have been installed on the shop floor since.
