Personal Injury Compensation for collapsed shop ceiling
In one of the more unusual personal injury cases in recent
months, a Nottinghamshire consumer has won substantial damages from
a household retailed after a ceiling collapsed on his head.
In 2010, 38-year-old Brian Hemmings visited a local Co-operative
branch in order to top up his gas card. But as he entered the
establishment, he was suddenly struck by debris from the crumbling
ceiling, leaving him with severe cuts and bruises.
"Clearly, you don't expect the ceiling to fall in when you pop
into your local corner shop - it was quite a shock at the time,"
said Mr Hemmings.
The ceiling was in such a state of disrepair that Mr Hemmings
only narrowly avoided being struck by a concrete plinth, and this
week his solicitor successfully challenged the Co-operative, with
the retailer settling out of court for £1,350 in personal injury
compensation.
"My client's injuries took around eight weeks to heal and during
this time he was unable to seek work as a builder and secure his
future earnings," said his solicitor.
"However, it could have been a lot worse - if the concrete plinth,
which was directly above Mr Hemmings' head, had not fallen at
an angle Brian's injuries would have been a lot more severe."
