Due to research and advances in modern medicine many cancers are now treatable. The key to recovery is detecting the cancer as early as possible and providing an accurate diagnosis. If diagnosis or detection is delayed, the cancer is allowed to grow untreated and this may result in the cancer becoming untreatable.
Most cancers are initially detected by a GP when presented with the early symptoms, or through cancer screening. However, neither of these lead to a definitive diagnosis. Usually only after being referred to a specialist and after the patient has undergone further investigation, such as MRI or CT scans, is a specific diagnosis possible.
A GP failing to recognise possible cancer related symptoms and make the necessary referrals to the appropriate specialist can cause serious short term and long term affects to the patient.
When a hospital doctor fails to prescribe the necessary tests after a patient is referred with potential cancer symptoms, the delay in diagnosis can be harmful to the patient. It may result in the patient not making a full recovery or even reduce the patient’s length of survival time. Most hospitals have MRI or CT scan facilities at their disposal and if they do not, then the hospital doctor can refer the patient to a hospital or clinic that does have the equipment to undertake the necessary investigations.
