Being confronted with a cancelled flight leaves you faced with a number of problems; you could miss a business meeting, lose out on holiday or even be stranded at foreign airport.
If your flight has been cancelled or if you have been taken off the flight due to the airline overbooking then the airline has an obligation to either refund the price of the flight or provide an alternative flight to you desired destination.
If the airline is at fault for cancelling the flight, and depending on the time of the alternative flight offered, you can claim compensation of up to £510 for the delay you incurred.
Even if you reject the alternative flight offered and get a full refund on the flight you could still be entitled to claim additional compensation depending on how much of a delay you would have suffered if you had opted to wait for the alternative flight.
Am I entitled to claim?
The rescheduled flight that you were offered following the cancellation of your original flight, whether you choose to board it or not, must arrive at its destination later than you were originally scheduled.
Your flight was cancelled within 14 days of the journey
The airline has to be responsible for the cancellation – e.g. technical problem caused by the airline, under-booked flight, the pilot is sick and not replaced or the airline failing to submit the necessary documentation on time.
Flight claims can only be for a European flight- Meaning that you must have flown from a European airport or flew with European airline that landed at an airport within the European Union
If you are under the age of 18 you will need someone to claim on your behalf
You cannot claim for a child who did not have their own seat on the plane

Up to 1,500 km (eg: London to Paris)
1,500 – 3,500 km (eg: London to Istanbul)
3,500 km + (eg: London to New York)
